What Causes Diarrhoea?
Imodium Original treats two types of diarrhoea:
-
IBS-related diarrhoea – Occurs during an Irritable Bowel Syndrome episode
-
Short-term diarrhoea – Often caused by stomach infections or food poisoning, usually resolving within a few days
How Does Imodium Original Work?

Contains 2mg loperamide per capsule
-
Slows down overactive bowels, reducing movement frequency

Allows more time for water & salts absorption

Breastfeeding? Do not take this medication as small amounts may pass into breast milk
Medication Interactions – Consult Before Use
Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking:

Ritonavir (HIV treatment)

Quinidine (irregular heart rhythms/malaria)

Oral desmopressin (excessive urination)

Itraconazole or ketoconazole (fungal infections)

Gemfibrozil (high cholesterol)
Can I Drive After Using Imodium Original?

May cause drowsiness, dizziness, or faintness – Do not drive unless you are sure you are unaffected
How to Take Imodium Original
-
Start with 2 capsules, then take 1 after each loose bowel movement
-
Do not exceed 6 capsules in 24 hours
-
Drink extra fluids to compensate for dehydration
Duration of Use
-
Short-term diarrhoea: Maximum 48 hours – Seek medical advice if symptoms persist
-
IBS-related diarrhoea: Up to 2 weeks for recurring episodes but no more than 48 hours per single episode
When NOT to Use Imodium Original
Avoid use if you:
-
Are under 12 years old or an IBS patient under 18
-
Are allergic to loperamide or ingredients
-
Have severe diarrhoea after antibiotics
-
Have flare-ups of inflammatory bowel conditions (e.g., ulcerative colitis)
-
Are constipated or have a swollen abdomen (especially in dehydrated children)
-
Have acute dysentery (bloody stools & high temperature)
Consult Your Doctor If You:
-
Have AIDS & experience abdominal swelling – Stop immediately & seek medical help
-
Have liver disease
-
Have had diarrhoea lasting more than 48 hours
-
Have been diagnosed with a sugar intolerance
-
Are experiencing severe diarrhoea
Additional IBS Considerations – Speak to Your Doctor If:

Over 40 & experiencing IBS symptoms after a long break

Over 40 & symptoms differ from usual

Recently passed blood in stools

Experiencing severe constipation or nausea

Reduced appetite or unexplained weight loss
