What is Bacterial Conjunctivitis?Β

Bacterial Conjunctivitis (also known as red eye) is a common eye condition that causes the thin layer of tissue that covers the front of the eye to become, red, inflamed and sore. If you have Bacterial Conjunctivitis you may experience:Β

  • Eye rednessΒ 

  • DischargeΒ 

  • Watery eyesΒ 

  • Burning or gritty sensation in the eyesΒ 

  • Sticky coating on eyelashesΒ 

Β 

Bacterial conjunctivitis is caused by an infectious bacterial infection. It usually isn't a cause for concern and it will clean up within a couple of weeks. Try not to wear contacts when suffering with conjunctivitis and you can cleanse your lashes of sticky or crusty residue with cotton wool and water.Β

How to use this product?Β 

Β 

Ensure that your hands have been washed and dried thoroughly before use and check the tube seal is not broken before first use. Remove the cap and take special care that the nozzle of the tube does not touch your eye, the skin around your eye or your fingers. Use a mirror to help you clearly see where you are placing the ointment. Place the nozzle of the tube close to your eye and gently pull the lower eyelid downwards and look up. Squeeze the tube gently and apply about 1 cm of the ointment to the space between the lower eyelid and the eye. Close the eye for a moment. Repeat in the other eye if needed. Replace the cap securely after use.Β

The dose is around 1cm to be applied to the affected eyes. If you're using drops during the day, apply the ointment at night before going to bed. The course of treatment is 5 days. Do NOT discontinue use before the end of the 5 days, even if you feel better.Β

Do not breathe on or touch the nozzle of the tube. Avoid touching the eyes or eyelids with the nozzle of the tube. Only use this product yourself, do NOT share with other people. Do NOT use this product without consulting your doctor first. If your symptoms do not improve after 5 days, seek advice from your doctor.Β

When NOT to use Optrex Bacterial ConjunctivitisΒ

Do NOT use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients (see ingredients tab for full list) or if you:Β

  • Have ever had problems with your blood during previous treatments with chloramphenicolΒ 

  • Have a family history of blood problems, such as low white blood cell, red blood cell or platelet countΒ 

Β 

If you have experienced any of the following, do NOT use this product and seek advice from your doctor or a Happy Pharmacy pharmacist:Β

  • Your eyesight is affectedΒ 

  • You have pain within the eyeΒ 

  • Your eye has suffered a blow or other injuryΒ 

  • Your eye is inflamed and you have a rash on the scalp or faceΒ 

  • The pupil of your eye looks unusual or your eye looks cloudyΒ 

  • Your eye has suffered a blow or other injuryΒ 

  • Your eye is inflamed and you have a rash on the scalp or faceΒ 

  • The pupil of your eye looks unusual or your eye looks cloudyΒ 

  • Your eyes are sensitive to lightΒ 

  • You have a foreign body in your eye, which has not been removedΒ 

  • You have recently had an eye infectionΒ 

  • You suffer from or have ever suffered from glaucoma or dry eye syndromeΒ 

  • You wear contact lensesΒ 

  • You have had eye surgery or laser treatment in the last 6 monthsΒ
