If you use Wegovy for weight loss, you already know that weekly injections add up quickly. But have you ever thought about where all those used pens go? Thanks to an innovative scheme called PenCycle, they no longer have to go to landfill — and playing your part is completely free and takes only a few minutes. Here is everything you need to know. |
|
23M pens sent to landfill or incinerated in the UK every year |
3,700+ UK community pharmacies registered with PenCycle |
Up to 85% of materials from each returned pen can be recycled |
What Is Wegovy — And Why Does Pen Disposal Matter?
Wegovy (semaglutide) is a once-weekly weight loss injection approved by the MHRA and recommended by NICE for eligible adults managing obesity. It belongs to a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which mimic a natural hormone to reduce appetite and slow digestion, helping patients lose an average of 15–20% of their body weight when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and exercise.
Each Wegovy prescription provides a month’s supply of pre-filled FlexTouch injection pens. At lower doses, each pen contains four weekly doses; at the newer 7.2mg maximum dose, each pen is single-use. Either way, the result is a steady stream of used plastic medical devices — and until recently, there was no sustainable way to deal with them. Standard household recycling bins cannot accept medical plastics. Sharps bins handle the needles, but the pens themselves have historically ended up in landfill or incineration. Across the UK, that amounts to around 23 million pre-filled injection pens every year.
Introducing PenCycle: The UK’s First Pen Recycling Scheme
PenCycle is a free recycling initiative launched by Novo Nordisk — the manufacturer of Wegovy — and is the first scheme of its kind in the UK. It was piloted in 2021 across Greater Manchester, Leicestershire and Rutland, and Greater Glasgow and Clyde, before rolling out nationally in October 2022.
The scheme is part of Novo Nordisk’s wider Circular for Zero sustainability strategy, which aims to eliminate the company’s environmental impact by 2030. PenCycle ensures that used Wegovy and Saxenda pens are returned, shipped back to Denmark on existing cargo routes, and processed at a specialist recycling plant where up to 85% of the materials in each pen — including high-quality plastics and glass — are reclaimed and given a new purpose. The recycled materials have already been transformed into everyday items such as office chairs and lamps.
The scheme aligns directly with the NHS Net Zero commitment, which calls on the entire UK health sector to reduce its environmental footprint. Novo Nordisk has formally joined the NHS Net Zero International Leadership Group in support of these ambitions.
How to Use PenCycle: A Step-by-Step Guide
Participating in PenCycle is genuinely simple. Here is how it works:
1. Remove the needle safely Always remove and dispose of the needle separately in a sharps container before placing the pen in your PenCycle box. Never put needles into the PenCycle return box.
2. Request your free PenCycle return box Order a free return box directly from pen-cycle.co.uk, or ask your pharmacist. Some online pharmacies, including Happy Pharmacy, automatically include a PenCycle box with qualifying Wegovy orders.
3. Fill the box with your empty pens Each PenCycle return box holds up to ten empty pens. Store your used (needleless) pens in the box until it is full.
4. Return the box You have two convenient options: post it back using the pre-paid Royal Mail freepost label included in the box, or drop it off at one of more than 3,700 participating UK community pharmacies.
5. That’s it Novo Nordisk handles everything from there. Your pens travel back to Denmark for recycling — you have done your part.
What Can — and Cannot — Go in Your PenCycle Box?
It is important to know what the scheme does and does not accept. PenCycle is designed specifically for pre-filled Novo Nordisk FlexPen and FlexTouch devices — which includes your Wegovy pens and Saxenda pens. It does not accept pens from other manufacturers, insulin vials, pumps, or any other medical devices. Needles must always be removed and disposed of in a sharps bin first.

Why It Matters: The Environmental Impact of PenCycle
The numbers behind the scheme are striking. Before PenCycle, almost all of those 23 million pens distributed annually in the UK ended up either incinerated — producing harmful gases and consuming significant energy — or in landfill, where non-biodegradable plastics can persist for hundreds of years.
The Pharmaceutical Journal reported that over 200,000 pens had been returned through the scheme as of August 2023, saving approximately two tonnes of plastic waste.6 Novo Nordisk’s own projections suggest the scheme has the potential to prevent 56 tonnes of plastic waste annually once participation reaches scale.
