Foundayo vs Wegovy Pill: Which Oral Weight-Loss Tablet Is Right for You?
For the first time, UK patients have a genuine choice between two different oral GLP-1 weight-loss tablets — Foundayo® (orforglipron) from Eli Lilly, and the Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide) from Novo Nordisk. They share the same broad mechanism and similar goals, but they're chemically different medicines with real differences in how they're taken, dosed, and where they currently stand in terms of UK availability. This guide compares them directly, using each manufacturer's own published data.
Quick Answer

The single biggest practical difference is how you take them: Foundayo can be taken at any time of day, with or without food or water, while the Wegovy pill must be taken on an empty stomach with a small sip of water, followed by a strict 30-minute wait before eating, drinking, or taking other oral medicines. In clinical trials, Wegovy's pill produced greater average weight loss (16.6% at 64 weeks, assuming full treatment adherence) than Foundayo has shown at its approved maximum dose (11.1% at 72 weeks) — though the two haven't been tested head-to-head, so this isn't a direct comparison. Right now, the most important practical difference is availability: the Wegovy pill is already available to order through Happy Pharmacy, while Foundayo is still awaiting UK launch following its MHRA authorisation.

The Core Difference: How You Take Them

This is where the two medicines genuinely diverge, and it comes down to their underlying chemistry. Foundayo is a small, non-peptide molecule, while the Wegovy pill delivers a peptide (semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection) using an absorption-enhancing ingredient called SNAC to survive digestion. That difference in formulation is exactly why their administration requirements are so different.

Why this matters day to day

For many people, the Wegovy pill's fasting requirement is manageable with a consistent morning routine — take it, wait, then have breakfast. But for anyone with an irregular schedule, shift work, or who simply doesn't want to plan their morning around a tablet, Foundayo's complete lack of food or water restriction is a genuine, practical advantage.

Weight Loss: What Each Trial Programme Shows

It's important to be upfront here: Foundayo and the Wegovy pill haven't been tested against each other in a head-to-head trial, so any comparison is between two separate trials with different designs, populations and timeframes — not a controlled, direct comparison.

Foundayo (ATTAIN-1)Wegovy Pill (OASIS 4)
Trial duration72 weeks64 weeks
Average weight loss (highest dose)11.1%16.6% (assuming full treatment adherence)
Placebo group2.1%2.7%
Participants achieving ≥20% weight loss18.4% (17.2mg dose)30%

On these figures, the Wegovy pill's trial showed a larger average effect — but trial populations, adherence assumptions, and study design all differ enough that this shouldn't be read as "the Wegovy pill definitely works better for you." Individual response to any GLP-1 medicine varies considerably, and your own results depend on your dose, your adherence, and your individual biology, not just the trial average.

Number of steps64
Minimum time per step30 days28 days (1 month)
Maximum dose17.2mg25mg

Foundayo's extra titration steps reflect a more gradual early dose increase, though both medicines take roughly four to five months to reach their respective maximum doses if following every step without pausing. For the complete Foundayo schedule, see our dedicated dosage and titration guide.

Side Effects Compared

Both medicines share a broadly similar side-effect profile, dominated by gastrointestinal symptoms — nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and indigestion are the most commonly reported for both, particularly during dose escalation. Foundayo's lack of a SNAC absorption enhancer may make it more comfortable for some people, since SNAC is itself a recognised cause of stomach irritation — though current evidence doesn't clearly establish one medicine as better tolerated overall than the other.

One side-effect-adjacent consideration both medicines share: because both slow gastric emptying, both can reduce the absorption of other oral medicines taken around the same time, including hormonal contraceptives. This isn't unique to either drug — it's a feature of the GLP-1 class — but it's worth discussing with your prescriber whichever tablet you choose. For more detail, see our Foundayo side effects guide.

Important

Neither medicine should be combined with another GLP-1 receptor agonist medicine, including each other, Mounjaro, or the Wegovy injection. If you're considering switching between any of these treatments, this should always be planned with your prescriber, typically with a short washout period.

Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: A Point of Difference

The Wegovy injection holds a specific UK licence for reducing cardiovascular risk in people with established cardiovascular disease, based on the SELECT trial. In the US, Novo Nordisk's Wegovy tablet has also gained this same cardiovascular indication — but as of now, this hasn't been confirmed as part of the UK-licensed indication for the tablet specifically, so this shouldn't be assumed without checking the current UK SmPC. Foundayo doesn't currently carry a cardiovascular indication in any market, though a dedicated cardiovascular outcomes trial (ATTAIN-Outcomes) is underway, including UK trial sites.

If You're Already on Another GLP-1 Medicine

Both Foundayo and the Wegovy pill are genuinely new treatment options for people who are either starting GLP-1 treatment for the first time, or considering a change from an existing injectable medicine. If you're currently on Mounjaro or the Wegovy injection and considering either oral option, it's worth knowing that switching isn't a like-for-like dose swap — both Foundayo and the Wegovy pill are started at their own low initial dose and titrated up from there, regardless of what dose you were taking on your previous treatment. Lilly's own clinical trial programme (ATTAIN-MAINTAIN) has specifically studied switching from injectable tirzepatide or semaglutide to Foundayo, and found that people generally maintained their previous weight loss after switching — useful context if you're considering moving from an injection to a tablet rather than starting from scratch.

A Genuinely New Kind of Choice

Until relatively recently, anyone wanting a GLP-1 medicine in the UK had one real choice to make: which injection. The arrival of two chemically different oral options — not just two brands of the same molecule — is a genuinely new situation for UK patients. Foundayo and the Wegovy pill aren't simply competing versions of the same tablet; they represent two different scientific approaches (small-molecule vs peptide) to the same underlying goal, each with its own trade-offs in convenience, trial results, and manufacturer backing. Neither is a straightforwardly "better" choice in the abstract — the right one depends on what matters most to you, and that's exactly the kind of decision a proper consultation is designed to help with, rather than a trial statistic on its own.

Which Might Suit You Better

Foundayo may suit you if…

  • You have an unpredictable schedule and don't want to plan your morning around a fasting window
  • You'd rather take a small-molecule drug than a peptide — orforglipron is a non-peptide GLP-1 receptor agonist, so it doesn't need an absorption enhancer to survive the stomach at all
  • You're comfortable waiting for UK launch, or want to register interest now to be first in line

The Wegovy Pill may suit you if…

  • You want to start an oral GLP-1 treatment today rather than waiting
  • You already have a consistent morning routine and don't mind the empty-stomach requirement
  • Maximum average weight loss, based on trial data, is your priority
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Foundayo or the Wegovy pill better for weight loss?
The Wegovy pill's own trial (OASIS 4) showed greater average weight loss than Foundayo's trial (ATTAIN-1), but the two haven't been compared head-to-head, so this isn't a direct, controlled comparison. Individual response varies considerably regardless of trial averages.
Can I buy Foundayo yet in the UK?
Not yet. Foundayo was authorised by the MHRA on 10 August 2026 but hasn't launched in the UK yet. The Wegovy pill, by contrast, is already available to order.
Do I have to fast before taking Foundayo?
No — this is one of Foundayo's key advantages. It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food or water, unlike the Wegovy pill, which requires an empty stomach and a 30-minute wait before eating or drinking.
Which has fewer side effects?
Both share a similar gastrointestinal side-effect profile. Foundayo avoids the specific SNAC-related stomach irritation associated with the Wegovy pill's absorption mechanism, but overall tolerability varies by individual, and current evidence doesn't clearly favour one over the other.
Are Foundayo and the Wegovy pill made by the same company?
No. Foundayo is made by Eli Lilly (the same company behind Mounjaro), while the Wegovy pill is made by Novo Nordisk (the same company behind the Wegovy injection).
Can I switch from the Wegovy pill to Foundayo once it's available?
This would need to be planned with your prescriber, typically involving a short washout period, since the two medicines shouldn't be taken together or immediately swapped without medical guidance.
Does either tablet reduce cardiovascular risk?
The Wegovy injection has a specific UK cardiovascular risk reduction licence. The Wegovy pill has gained this indication in the US, but this isn't yet confirmed for the UK-licensed tablet. Foundayo doesn't currently have this indication in any market, though a cardiovascular outcomes trial is underway.
Which tablet has the higher maximum dose?
The Wegovy pill's maximum dose is 25mg, compared with Foundayo's 17.2mg — but these figures aren't directly comparable, since the two medicines are chemically different and work through different binding mechanisms at different potencies.
Do both tablets require a prescription?
Yes. Both Foundayo and the Wegovy pill are prescription-only medicines (POMs) in the UK, available only following a consultation with a registered prescriber.
Should I wait for Foundayo or start the Wegovy pill now?
This depends on your priorities. If starting treatment as soon as possible matters most, the Wegovy pill is available now. If Foundayo's lack of a fasting requirement is a bigger factor for you, registering your interest and waiting may be the better choice — this is exactly the kind of decision worth discussing during a consultation.
