Weight Loss Pills vs Injections: Foundayo, Mounjaro and Wegovy

Weight loss pills vs injections involves different daily routines, formulations and prescribing considerations; the right option depends on individual suitability and preferences. This guide compares Foundayo®, the Wegovy pill and injectable treatments while keeping evidence from separate trials in context.
Quick Answer

Mounjaro and Wegovy injections are taken weekly; Foundayo and Wegovy tablets are taken daily. Tablets avoid needles, while injections need appropriate storage and sharps disposal. Foundayo has no fasting requirement; Wegovy tablets have specific fasting, water and waiting instructions. The trials below show results for particular medicines and doses, not proof that one format is always better. Suitability, side effects and a routine you can follow all matter.

The table uses treatment-regimen or treatment-policy analyses, which include the effects of stopping treatment: SURMOUNT-1, STEP 1, STEP UP, ATTAIN-1 and OASIS 4. Estimates assuming treatment continued are different: examples include 12.4% for Foundayo, 16.6% for Wegovy tablets and 22.5% for Mounjaro. These are separate trials in adults without type 2 diabetes, with different populations, durations and analysis methods. They cannot establish which medicine will work better for an individual. All treatments were studied alongside diet and physical activity. For a closer look at the semaglutide and tirzepatide options, our weight loss drugs comparison covers Mounjaro, Wegovy injections and the Wegovy pill.

What Injections Actually Involve

Mounjaro and the Wegovy injection are administered once weekly using a pre-filled pen. Follow the instructions for your supplied pen and ask the pharmacy to demonstrate the technique if needed. The abdomen, thigh and upper arm are approved injection sites; rotate sites as instructed.

  • Pens must be refrigerated before first use, then can typically be kept at room temperature for a defined period afterwards
  • Only one weekly administration to remember, compared with seven weekly doses for a daily tablet
  • Requires proper sharps disposal, which needs a small amount of planning (a sharps bin, and knowing your local disposal options)
  • No timing restrictions around food — injections can be given at any time of day, regardless of meals
What Tablets Actually Involve

Foundayo and the Wegovy pill are both taken once daily, which means considerably more individual doses to remember over a year, but no needles, no sharps disposal, and far simpler storage and travel.

  • No refrigeration is required, but keep tablets in their original packaging and follow the storage instructions in the leaflet
  • No needle phobia to navigate, which matters more than it might sound for a genuinely significant number of people who avoid or delay treatment specifically because of injection anxiety
  • Foundayo has no food or water restriction. Take the Wegovy pill after at least 8 hours without food, swallow it whole with no more than 120 mL of water, then wait at least 30 minutes before food, drink or other oral medicines.
  • Missed-dose instructions differ by medicine. Check your leaflet or ask the pharmacy; a missed injection does not always mean waiting a full week
Does Format Affect How Well They Work?

The medicine, formulation, dose and your ability to follow the prescribed routine all affect treatment. Mounjaro acts at both GIP and GLP-1 receptors; the other medicines listed act at GLP-1 receptors. Separate trial averages cannot isolate a tablet-versus-injection effect. Choose with your prescriber using your medical history, treatment response and practical preferences.

Worth knowing

Higher or lower results in separate trials should not be treated as a ranking of delivery formats. Even studies of the same ingredient can differ in dose, population, duration and handling of treatment discontinuation.

Switching Between Formats

If you are considering moving from Mounjaro or another injection to a tablet, a change needs a prescriber-led plan: the starting dose and timing depend on your current medicine, dose, response and side effects. Do not overlap treatments or calculate your own equivalent dose. For example, the UK Wegovy tablet information includes a prescriber-led switch from 2.4 mg weekly injections to 25 mg daily tablets one week later. That is not a general conversion rule for other doses or medicines. ATTAIN-MAINTAIN studied selected patients who had completed an injection trial. Switching to orforglipron preserved more of their earlier weight loss than switching to placebo, but some weight regain occurred. This does not guarantee that someone switching in routine care will keep all their previous weight loss.

Important

Do not take these weight-loss tablets and injections together or change treatment without your prescriber. A switching plan needs to specify the last dose, the next medicine, its starting dose and when to take it.

Which Format Might Suit You Better

An injection may suit you if…

  • You'd rather deal with treatment once a week than think about it every day
  • You're comfortable with self-injecting, or willing to learn
  • Your prescriber considers an injectable treatment appropriate for your medical history and goals

A tablet may suit you if…

  • You have needle anxiety, or would simply prefer never to self-inject
  • You travel frequently and want to avoid managing cold-chain storage and sharps disposal on the road
  • A consistent daily routine works better for you than a weekly one
  • You specifically want to avoid any fasting window — in which case Foundayo is the tablet option here without food or water restrictions
Beyond the Format: What Actually Determines Success

All four medicines are used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Your response also depends on the treatment, dose, tolerability and whether you can follow the prescribed routine. Discuss these together with cost and practical preferences, rather than choosing solely from headline trial percentages.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a pill or an injection more effective for weight loss?
The trials tested particular medicines and doses, not the general question of whether pills or injections work better. Their results can inform a consultation, but cannot predict your response or rank formats on their own.
Are tablets easier to take than injections?
Many people find tablets more straightforward day-to-day since there's no needle involved, but tablets need to be taken every single day rather than once a week, which some people find harder to keep consistent over time. It genuinely depends on the person.
Can I switch from an injection to a tablet?
A change needs a prescriber-led plan: the starting dose and timing depend on your current medicine, dose, response and side effects. Do not overlap treatments or calculate your own equivalent dose. Switching studies show that some previous weight loss can be maintained, but weight regain is still possible.
Do tablets need to be refrigerated like the injections?
Foundayo and Wegovy tablets do not need refrigeration. Keep them in their original packaging and follow their leaflet instructions. Injection storage rules depend on the medicine and the pen supplied.
Which is better for someone with needle phobia?
Either tablet option removes needles from the equation entirely, which is a genuine and valid reason to prefer this format — needle anxiety is a real barrier that stops some people starting treatment altogether.
Do I need to fast before taking any of these medicines?
Take the Wegovy pill after at least 8 hours without food, swallow it whole with no more than 120 mL of water, then wait at least 30 minutes before food, drink or other oral medicines. Foundayo, Mounjaro and Wegovy injections do not require fasting around the dose.
Is Foundayo available now?
Yes. Foundayo is available through Happy Pharmacy following clinical assessment and prescriber approval, alongside Mounjaro, Wegovy injections and Wegovy pills. Check the relevant product page for current prices and purchase options.
Can I take a tablet and an injection together?
No. Combining GLP-1 medicines, in any format, isn't recommended and increases the risk of side effects without an established benefit.
Is one company's products better than another's?
Mounjaro and Foundayo are both made by Eli Lilly; the Wegovy injection and Wegovy pill are both made by Novo Nordisk. Each company's products differ by molecule and format, not simply by brand — the right choice depends on your own priorities, not which company makes it.
What if I start on one format and it doesn't suit me?
Switching between formats, or between medicines entirely, is a common and manageable conversation to have with your prescriber if your first choice isn't working well for you.
