Mounjaro, Wegovy and the Wegovy pill are all licensed, clinically proven treatments for weight management, and all three work by targeting the same appetite and metabolism pathways in the body. But they aren't interchangeable. They differ in their active ingredient, how many hormone receptors they act on, how they're taken, how quickly they're dosed up, and the results reported in their respective clinical trial programmes.
That means the "best" treatment genuinely is personal — it depends on what matters most to you, and on what your prescriber considers appropriate given your health history. This guide is designed to help you have a more informed conversation during your consultation, not to replace it.

Both are self-administered by a once-weekly subcutaneous injection, typically into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm, using a pre-filled pen. Most patients find the injection itself straightforward after their first one or two doses — the needle is very fine and the injection takes only a few seconds. The main appeal of a weekly injection is that it's easy to remember and doesn't depend on your morning routine.
The Wegovy PillThe Wegovy pill uses SNAC absorption technology to allow semaglutide to be absorbed through the stomach lining, which is why it must be taken as a strict daily "Sip & Go" routine: on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning, with no more than 120ml of plain water, followed by a 30-minute wait before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other oral medicines. For needle-avoidant patients, or those who travel frequently and find carrying and storing pens impractical, the tablet removes that barrier entirely — but it does require a stricter daily routine than a weekly injection.
Results vary significantly between individuals, and the figures below are trial averages, not guarantees. They come from the manufacturers' head-to-head and placebo-controlled trial programmes.

A higher average result in a clinical trial doesn't predict your personal outcome. Response to GLP-1 medicines depends on genetics, starting weight, adherence to dose escalation, and lifestyle factors — which is exactly why ongoing pharmacist support matters more than the headline trial number.
All three medicines share a broadly similar side-effect profile, because they act on the same appetite-regulating pathways. The most commonly reported effects across all options are nausea, constipation, diarrhoea and reduced appetite, particularly during the first few weeks of any new dose.

- You're comfortable with a weekly injection routine
The Wegovy Pill may suit you if…
- You'd prefer to avoid injections altogether
- You travel frequently and want a treatment that's simple to carry and doesn't need refrigeration in the same way as pens
- You can commit to a consistent morning fasting routine
It's common for patients to start on one treatment and switch to another — for example, moving from Wegovy injection to Mounjaro after a plateau, or from an injection to the Wegovy pill for convenience. Switching between GLP-1 medicines should always be done under pharmacist or prescriber guidance, typically with a short washout period and a return to a lower starting dose on the new medicine, rather than continuing at an equivalent dose. Never switch or combine these medicines without medical supervision.
