What is Orlistat?

Orlistat is a prescription medication used to aid weight loss in adults who are overweight or obese. It works by preventing the absorption of around one-third of the fat you eat, helping you reduce your calorie intake and lose weight.

Clinically Proven: Backed by extensive research.

Effective Weight-Loss Aid: Helps you lose more weight than dieting alone.

Prescription Medication: Safe and effective when used as directed by a healthcare professional.

How Does Orlistat Work?

Orlistat targets fat in your digestive system by inhibiting the enzymes that break it down.

This means approximately 30% of the fat you consume passes through your system undigested, reducing your calorie intake and supporting weight loss.

Blocks Fat Absorption: Specifically targets dietary fat.

Encourages Healthier Eating: Works best with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet.

Who Can Use Orlistat?

Orlistat is suitable for adults who:

  • Have a BMI of 30 or higher (obesity), or
  • Have a BMI of 28 or higher with weight-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure,  high cholesterol or obstructive sleep apnoea.

Important: Orlistat is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women or individuals with certain medical conditions, such as chronic malabsorption syndrome or cholestasis. Consult your GP or our pharmacists for advice.

How do I take Orlistat?

When to Take

  • Take one capsule (120 mg) up to three times a day, just before, during, or within one hour after a main meal that contains fat.
  • If you skip a meal or if your meal contains no fat, you do not need to take Orlistat for that meal.

How to Take

  • Swallow the capsule whole with water.
  • Do not take more than three capsules in 24 hours.

Dietary Guidance

  • Stick to a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet while using Orlistat. Aim to have no more than 30% of your total daily calories coming from fat.
  • Spread your fat intake evenly across your three main meals to reduce the likelihood of side effects.
Is Orlistat suitable for everyone?

Orlistat is suitable for adults with a BMI of 28 or higher (with weight-related conditions) or 30 and above. It is not suitable for those under 18 years of age, pregnant or breastfeeding women or those with certain medical conditions. Orlistat can interact with certain medication.

Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, even those not prescribed. This is important as using more than one medicine at the same time can strengthen or weaken the effects of the medicines.

  • Orlistat may modify the activity of Anticoagulant drugs (e.g. warfarin). Your doctor may need to monitor your blood coagulation.
  • Co-administration with ciclosporin is not recommended. Your doctor may need to monitor your ciclosporin blood levels more frequently than usual.
  • Iodine salts and/or levothyroxine. Cases of hypothyroidism and/or reduced control of hypothyroidism may occur.
  • Amiodarone. You may ask your doctor for advice.
  • Medicines to treat HIV.
  • Medicines for depression, psychiatric disorders or anxiousness
  • Orlistat may unbalance an anticonvulsant treatment, by decreasing the absorption of antiepileptic drugs, thus leading to convulsions.

Please contact your doctor before starting treatment.

Can I eat normally while taking Orlistat?

To minimise side effects, it’s important to follow a low-fat diet while taking Orlistat.

Meals should ideally contain no more than 30% of their calories from fat.

Orlistat reduces the absorption of supplements of some fat soluble nutrients, particularly betacarotene and vitamin E.

You should therefore follow your doctor’s advice in taking a well balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables.

Your doctor may suggest you take a multivitamin supplement.
