What is Viagra?

Viagra is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). Its active ingredient is sildenafil citrate, which works by increasing blood flow to the penis to help achieve and maintain an erection. Viagra is typically taken about 30 to 60 minutes before sexual activity, and its effects can last for up to 4 hours. It requires sexual stimulation to be effective.

How does Viagra work?

Viagra helps treat erectile dysfunction by boosting blood flow to the penis. When you're sexually aroused, your brain sends signals to the penis through nerves, instructing the muscles in the penile wall to relax. This relaxation allows blood to flow in and fill the open spaces.

The blood enters more quickly than it can leave through the veins, causing the veins to compress and trap the blood in the penis, resulting in an erection.

Viagra contains sildenafil citrate, a PDE-5 inhibitor. This medication prevents the breakdown of a chemical that relaxes the smooth muscle in the penis, increasing blood flow and leading to longer-lasting erections.

Remember, sexual arousal is necessary for this treatment to work.

What is the difference between Viagra and Viagra Connect?

Viagra and Viagra Connect both contain the same active ingredient, sildenafil citrate, and work in the same way to treat erectile dysfunction. However, there are a few key differences:

Availability
a. Viagra Connect: Can be purchased over the counter without a prescription, making it more accessible for men experiencing erectile dysfunction.
b. Viagra: is a prescription only medication which can be issued after an online consultation with the clinical team at Happy Pharmacy.

Dosage Options
a. Viagra Connect: Only available in a single 50mg dosage.
b. Viagra: Available in three different strengths—25mg, 50mg, and 100mg. If you require a higher or lower dosage than 50mg, a prescription for Viagra will be necessary.

If you're unsure about which option is best for you, feel free to contact our Happy Pharmacy team for advice or consult your doctor for further guidance.

FAQs

How should I take Viagra?

Viagra should be taken as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Typically, it's taken about 30 minutes to an hour before sexual activity. Avoid taking it more than once a day.

How long does Viagra last?

The effects of Viagra usually last up to four hours. However, this can vary depending on the individual.

Are there any food or drink restrictions while taking Viagra?

VIAGRA can be taken with or without food. When this medicine is taken after a high-fat meal, it may take a little longer to start working. Do not take VIAGRA with grapefruit or grapefruit juice, because this can affect how the medicine works. Drinking excessive alcohol can temporarily reduce your ability to achieve an erection and increase the risk of side effects. To get a benefit from the medicine, you are advised not to drink large amounts of alcohol before sexual activity.

Can I take Viagra with other medications?

You should inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you're currently taking. Viagra can interact with certain medications, especially nitrates used for chest pain, which can lead to a dangerous drop in blood pressure.

What should I do if I experience side effects?

Common side effects include headaches, flushing, and an upset stomach. If you experience serious side effects like priapism (an erection lasting more than 4 hours), sudden vision loss, or sudden hearing loss, seek medical help immediately.

Is Viagra safe for everyone?

Viagra is generally safe for most men with erectile dysfunction, but it's not suitable for everyone. Individuals with certain medical conditions or those taking specific medications should avoid it. Always consult with your healthcare provider to ensure it's safe for you.

When should I not take Viagra?

Do not take Viagra;

If you are allergic to Viagra or any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in the patient information leaflet.
If you are taking medicines called nitrates, as the combination may lead to a dangerous fall in your blood pressure.

Tell your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines which are often given for relief of angina pectoris (or “chest pain”). If you are not certain, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

If you are using any of the medicines known as nitric oxide donors such as amyl nitrite (“poppers”), as the combination may also lead to a dangerous fall in your blood pressure.
If you are taking riociguat. This drug is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (i.e., high blood pressure in the lungs) and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (i.e., high blood pressure in the lungs secondary to blood clots). PDE5 inhibitors, such as Viagra have been shown to increase the hypotensive effects of this medicine. If you are taking riociguat or are unsure tell your doctor.

If you have a severe heart or liver problem.

If you have recently had a stroke or a heart attack, or if you have low blood pressure.

If you have certain rare inherited eye diseases (such as retinitis pigmentosa).
If you have ever had loss of vision due to non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION).

If you have sickle cell anaemia (an abnormality of red blood cells), leukaemia (cancer of blood cells), multiple myeloma (cancer of bone marrow).

If you have a deformity of your penis or Peyronie’s Disease.

If you have problems with your heart. Your doctor should carefully check whether your heart can take the additional strain of having sex.

If you currently have a stomach ulcer, or a bleeding problem (such as haemophilia).

If you experience sudden decrease or loss of vision, stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately. You should not use this medicine with any other oral or local treatments for erectile dysfunction. You should not use this medicine with treatments for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) containing sildenafil or any other PDE5 inhibitors.

You should not take Viagra if you do not have erectile dysfunction.

You should not take Viagra if you are a woman.

Are there any precautions that I need to be aware of before starting Viagra?

You should schedule a health check-up with your doctor as soon as possible within the first 6 months of starting to use Sildenafil to ensure that your erection problems are not caused by any serious health condition. Erectile dysfunction may be an early sign of:

  • cardiovascular disease
  • diabetes
  • high blood pressure
  • high cholesterol

Tell your doctor about your problems if you have not already done so.

How do I take Viagra?

Take one tablet 30-60 minutes before intercourse, or up to 4 hours before sexual activity. You won't get an erection just by taking the pill; sexual stimulation is necessary for it to work. Swallow the tablet with a glass of water. Viagra can be taken with or without food, but if taken after a high-fat meal, it may take longer to start working.

Do not exceed one tablet within 24 hours. Taking more than 100mg of Sildenafil won't increase its effectiveness and may raise the risk of side effects. If the medication doesn't work, please contact your doctor.
