Mounjaro and Wegovy can support weight management when they are prescribed as part of a wider plan. Most problems are not about “failing” treatment; they are practical issues such as expecting too much too soon, finding meals difficult when appetite changes, or being unsure when to ask for help.

What are the most common mistakes with Mounjaro or Wegovy?

The most common avoidable mistakes are changing a dose without advice, relying on one weigh-in, eating or drinking too little because of side effects, skipping the pen instructions, and buying medicines from unregulated sellers. A calmer, consistent approach is safer and easier to maintain.

1. Changing your dose or schedule without advice

Use your medicine exactly as prescribed. Do not take an extra dose, speed up dose increases, or change your injection day without checking the Patient Information Leaflet and speaking to your prescriber or pharmacist. The dose-escalation schedule is individual and is designed to balance effectiveness and tolerability.

2. Treating a short-term weight change as a verdict

Body weight naturally changes from day to day because of fluid, meals, bowel movements and activity. Track progress consistently and look at the pattern over time. Our guide on how to track weight loss on Mounjaro or Wegovy explains what to record besides the number on the scale.

3. Ignoring food, fluids or persistent side effects

Reduced appetite can make it harder to meet your nutritional needs. Aim for regular, balanced meals that you can tolerate, drink regularly, and ask for individual advice if nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or difficulty eating persists. There is no single protein or fluid target that is right for everybody. For practical food ideas, see what to eat on Mounjaro or Wegovy.

4. Skipping the instructions for your own pen

Mounjaro and Wegovy pen types do not all work in the same way. Read the leaflet and Instructions for Use in your pack before injecting, use a new needle where required, and dispose of sharps safely. Our Mounjaro and Wegovy injection guide covers the shared practical principles.

5. Buying from an unregulated source

Prescription medicines should be supplied after a proper clinical assessment by a regulated provider. Avoid social-media sellers and websites that do not require a prescription. If you are buying online, check the pharmacy’s entry on the GPhC register and make sure there is a clear route to clinical advice.

6. Not asking for help early enough

Contact your prescriber or pharmacist if side effects are severe, do not settle, or stop you eating or drinking normally. Seek urgent help if you cannot keep fluids down, have severe abdominal pain, or develop symptoms that worry you. Do not stop, restart or change treatment without clinical advice.

A simple weekly check-in

  • Take your medicine on the agreed schedule.
  • Review how you are tolerating meals, fluids and activity.
  • Look at the overall trend rather than one result.
  • Write down questions or side effects to discuss with your clinician.
