Staying hydrated matters for everyone, and it can take a little more planning when you are using a weight-loss medicine that reduces your appetite or causes digestive side effects. The aim is not to force large amounts of water, but to drink regularly and get advice early if you cannot keep fluids down.
How much should you drink on weight-loss treatment?
The NHS suggests most people aim for six to eight cups or glasses of fluid a day. Your needs can be higher in hot weather, during exercise, or if you are losing fluid through vomiting or diarrhoea. Water is a good choice, but other drinks and water-rich foods also count.
Use thirst and the colour of your urine as simple guides: pale yellow usually suggests you are drinking enough, while dark urine or passing urine much less often can be a sign to drink more or seek advice.
Why hydration can be more difficult with Mounjaro or Wegovy
Mounjaro and Wegovy can reduce appetite and may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation, particularly when starting or increasing a dose. Those effects can make it harder to drink enough and can lead to fluid loss.
Small, frequent sips are often easier than large drinks if you feel nauseous. Try keeping a drink nearby, setting reminders, choosing a temperature you find comfortable, and including fluids with meals and snacks. If constipation is a problem, fluids, fibre and gentle movement can all help; see our advice on managing weight-loss injection side effects.
When to seek medical advice
Contact NHS 111, your prescriber or pharmacist if you have persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, cannot keep fluids down, feel faint, are passing very little urine, or have symptoms that are worsening rather than settling. Call 999 for severe symptoms such as confusion, collapse, chest pain or difficulty breathing.
Simple ways to make drinking easier
- Keep water or another suitable drink within reach and take regular sips.
- Carry a bottle when you are out, especially in hot weather.
- Choose water, sugar-free drinks, milk, tea or coffee in moderation, and include water-rich foods such as soups, fruit and yoghurt.
- If you have diabetes, kidney disease, heart failure or a fluid restriction, follow the advice from your clinical team instead of setting your own target.
