Weight Loss Results

Wegovy Before and After: Results After 1, 2, 3 and 6 Months

Quick Answer: Results with Wegovy develop gradually. In the first two months, most people are still increasing their dose, so changes in appetite and weight may be modest. By three months, the overall trend is usually easier to assess, while six months gives a clearer picture of how well the treatment is working and whether side effects are manageable. In longer-term trials, average weight loss was 14.9% at 68 weeks with 2.4 mg and 18.7% at 72 weeks with 7.2 mg. These figures are study averages, not personal targets or guarantees.

The Evidence Wegovy Clinical Trial Results: The Evidence Base The weight loss data for Wegovy 7.2 mg comes from the STEP UP (Semaglutide Treatment Effect in People with Obesity at a higher dose) clinical trial, a randomised, controlled, phase 3b trial involving adults with obesity across multiple countries. The trial studied a higher dose; its results should not be confused with those from STEP 1 at 2.4 mg. STEP UP studied adults with obesity and without diabetes, comparing weekly 7.2 mg, 2.4 mg and placebo alongside lifestyle support. Overall average loss at 72 weeks was 18.7%, 15.6% and 3.9%, respectively. Estimates assuming continued treatment were 20.7%, 17.5% and 2.4%. The analyses answer different questions and should not be mixed. STEP UP: Headline Outcomes at 72 Weeks

What the Trial Data Means in Practice Results vary within each trial. The 18.7% and 20.7% figures are different analyses of STEP UP, not the limits of a typical personal outcome. Results from 7.2 mg should not be presented as expectations for every Wegovy dose.
Important context: An average does not mean half of patients lost more and half lost less. It cannot predict your result. Dose, tolerability, starting weight, health and treatment duration all matter.
Month by Month

Wegovy Before and After 1 Month: Early Changes

Treatment normally starts at 0.25 mg weekly to help your body adjust. Your prescriber increases the dose gradually according to how well you tolerate it, so early weight changes vary. If nausea or digestive symptoms are difficult to manage, our Wegovy side-effects guide explains what may help and when to contact a clinician. Typical Weight Loss in Month 1 There is no reliable kilogram target for every patient in month one. Some notice appetite or weight changes early; others need longer. Keep track of progress and side effects without judging the whole course by the first few weeks. If you want a general estimate based on your starting weight, activity and calorie intake, the Wegovy weight loss calculator can provide additional context without promising an individual result. More noticeable than the number on the scales is often the change in appetite. Some people notice less hunger, fewer food cravings or smaller portions within the first few weeks, even while taking 0.25 mg. Others notice little change at first. Appetite changes can support weight loss over time, but they do not predict exactly how much weight you will lose. Beyond the Scales: Early Physical Changes Some people notice that their clothes fit differently before the scales change much. Others first notice that they think about food less often or find it easier to stop eating when they feel full. These early changes vary and should be considered alongside your longer-term weight trend.
Month 1 Reality Check: Small or absent early weight changes do not by themselves show whether treatment will work. Do not increase your dose faster to chase a target.

Wegovy Before and After 2 Months: What May Change

By the second month, the standard schedule usually moves to 0.5 mg once weekly for weeks 5 to 8. Your prescriber may delay an increase if side effects are difficult to manage.

Some people notice a clearer change in hunger, portion size or weight by this stage, while others still see only small changes. A two-month comparison is useful for tracking direction, but it is too early to set a fixed percentage or kilogram target.

Wegovy Before and After 3 Months: An Early Review Point

At three months, people following the standard schedule are taking 1 mg weekly, although escalation can be delayed for tolerability. This is a useful opportunity to review progress, not a deadline for a particular result. Typical Weight Loss at 3 Months At three months you are usually still progressing through dose escalation. A precise 5–7% loss should not be promised as a typical result for everyone. Review your weight trend, tolerability and treatment routine with your prescriber. Body Composition Changes at 3 Months Weight loss can include lean tissue as well as fat. Discuss balanced nutrition, an appropriate protein intake and suitable strength activity with your clinician; needs vary, especially with other medical conditions. How Quickly Does Wegovy Work? The treatment acts on appetite, but the timing and degree of noticeable change vary. Assess the weight trend over months rather than expecting a dramatic change within days.

Wegovy Before and After 6 Months: Reviewing Progress

By six months, the dose depends on your response and tolerability. The usual maintenance dose is 2.4 mg weekly. For adults with obesity, a prescriber may increase it to 7.2 mg if needed after at least four weeks at 2.4 mg; this is not an automatic step for everyone. Typical Weight Loss at 6 Months Six months is a useful clinical review point, not a deadline for a fixed percentage loss. UK prescribing information advises an individual benefit–risk decision about continuing if less than 5% of starting weight has been lost after six months. Visible and Health Improvements at 6 Months By six months, some people notice changes in health or day-to-day comfort as well as weight. These changes are not guaranteed and should be reviewed individually. They may include:
  • Blood pressure changes, which should be measured and reviewed individually
  • Blood glucose changes, including fasting glucose and HbA1c in people with pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes
  • Joint comfort as the load through the knees, hips and ankles decreases
  • Sleep quality, particularly in people with weight-related sleep apnoea
  • Energy and stamina as weight decreases and eating habits become more settled
  • Mood and confidence, although emotional changes vary from person to person
Weight Loss Plateau at 6 Months A minority of patients experience a Wegovy weight loss plateau around the four to six month mark, where weight loss slows or temporarily stalls. This can be a normal response as the body adapts to a lower weight and needs less energy. A plateau does not mean treatment has failed. Reviewing dietary quality, protein intake and activity levels with a clinician is the appropriate response, not discontinuing treatment.

Long-Term Wegovy Before and After Results: The 72-Week Trial Benchmark

The STEP UP trial measured its main weight-loss outcome at 72 weeks. This provides useful long-term context for the 7.2 mg dose, but it does not predict how much an individual will lose or how quickly they will reach that point. Typical Weight Loss at 72 Weeks STEP UP provides a 72-week trial benchmark for 7.2 mg. The overall average loss was 18.7%; an analysis assuming continued treatment estimated 20.7%. Trial averages do not guarantee an individual result or establish when your final weight will be reached. Weight Loss Beyond 72 Weeks STEP UP followed patients for 72 weeks. Its endpoint cannot tell us that most people will keep losing weight indefinitely. Longer-term treatment and maintenance should be reviewed with your prescriber.

Maximising Results Factors That Affect Wegovy Results Wegovy produces clinically significant weight loss in the vast majority of patients who complete treatment, but individual outcomes vary considerably. Understanding the factors that influence results helps patients maximise their own response to treatment. When deciding whether Wegovy is worth it, consider likely results alongside cost, tolerability and your willingness to continue treatment long term. Starting Weight and BMI Patients with higher starting weights tend to lose greater absolute amounts of weight, though percentage weight loss is broadly consistent across weight categories. A patient starting at 140 kg who achieves 15% loss will lose 21 kg; a patient starting at 90 kg achieving the same percentage loses 13.5 kg. Both outcomes are clinically significant. Patients closer to the lower BMI eligibility threshold (27–30) may experience a somewhat slower weight loss trajectory. Diet Quality Wegovy can make it easier to eat smaller portions, but food quality still matters. Aim for balanced meals with enough protein and fibre, while limiting foods and drinks that provide plenty of calories without much nutritional value. Our guide to what to eat on Mounjaro or Wegovy gives practical meal ideas and advice for maintaining nutrition during treatment. Physical Activity Exercise does not dramatically accelerate weight loss on Wegovy for most patients, but it plays a critical role in body composition. Patients who incorporate resistance training or consistent aerobic activity may be better placed to limit muscle loss on Wegovy, supporting better body composition and physical function as the scale changes. The STEP 3 trial, which combined semaglutide with intensive behavioural therapy including physical activity support, achieved slightly higher average weight loss than STEP 1. Adherence to the Dose Schedule Following the Wegovy dose schedule agreed with your prescriber and taking each weekly dose consistently supports treatment. The standard schedule increases the dose gradually, but your prescriber may slow this down if side effects are difficult. If you miss doses or are unsure when to increase, contact your prescribing team rather than changing the schedule yourself. Metabolic Factors Underlying metabolic health affects the rate of weight loss on Wegovy. Patients with hypothyroidism, especially if undertreated, insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes may find weight loss progresses more slowly, particularly in the early months. People using Wegovy for PCOS may also need their progress reviewed alongside the wider clinical management of the condition. These conditions do not prevent Wegovy from working, but they may require additional clinical management alongside treatment. Sleep and Stress Poor sleep and ongoing stress can affect appetite, energy and the routines that support weight management. If sleep or stress is making it difficult to eat regularly or stay active, discuss practical support with your pharmacist or GP.

Common MistakeWhy It Slows ResultsWhat to Do Instead
Eating through nauseaPersistent nausea can make it difficult to eat and drink enough.Try small, manageable meals and contact your prescriber if nausea persists or you cannot maintain food and fluid intake.
Choosing high-calorie liquidsDrinks such as alcohol, sugary drinks, smoothies and full-fat lattes can add substantial calories without being as filling as a meal.Stick to water, herbal teas and low-calorie drinks. Minimise alcohol entirely during active weight loss.
Skipping meals then bingeingExtended fasting followed by eating can trigger compensatory eating, undermining the steady calorie reduction Wegovy is designed to create.Eat small, regular meals to maintain stable energy and work with the drug's mechanism.
Not prioritising proteinLow protein intake during rapid weight loss leads to muscle loss, a reduced metabolic rate and a less favourable body composition at the target weight.Include protein-containing foods and ask your clinician or dietitian about an appropriate intake for you.
Stopping treatment earlyWeight regain can occur after semaglutide is stopped, so read our guide to keeping weight off after Wegovy and discuss an individual maintenance plan with your prescriber.Treat Wegovy as a long-term tool. Discuss any planned discontinuation with your prescribing pharmacist first.
Missing injectionsMultiple missed doses reduce semaglutide blood levels and weaken appetite suppression, slowing weight loss.Set a weekly reminder. If a dose is missed by more than 5 days, skip it and resume on the usual day.
FAQs Frequently Asked Questions: Wegovy Results
There is no fixed first-month loss. Month one normally uses the starting dose, and early response varies.
Three-month results vary. Do not treat a particular percentage or kilogram loss as a required milestone.
Some people notice appetite changes early. Meaningful weight change is assessed over time rather than a few days.
A 5% reduction can be clinically meaningful. Your prescriber considers your wider health, response and tolerability rather than a rigid three-month target.
Progress can slow or plateau. Review the trend, nutrition and activity with your prescriber; a temporary stall alone does not establish treatment failure.
Yes, some participants did. In STEP UP, 47.7% of the 7.2 mg group achieved at least 20% loss during the trial period. This is not guaranteed for an individual.
Weight regain can occur after stopping. Discuss a maintenance and monitoring plan with your prescriber before changing treatment.
Activity, including suitable strength exercises, can support fitness and help preserve muscle during weight loss. Adapt it to your health and ability.
Review weight trends, tolerability and health changes with your prescriber. If less than 5% has been lost after six months, UK prescribing information calls for an individual decision about continuing.
Wegovy is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased activity. A balanced, sustainable plan should still provide adequate nutrition.
Individual outcomes vary; a sex-based average cannot predict your own response. Discuss relevant hormonal or metabolic conditions with your clinician.
No. A trial mean is not a personal forecast and does not mean half of participants lost more and half lost less.
