What is Sildenafil?
Sildenafil is a medication primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It helps increase blood flow to the penis, which is essential for achieving and maintaining an erection during sexual activity. The active ingredient in sildenafil is sildenafil citrate, which is also the same compound found in Viagra. It was only available under the brand name Viagra until the patent expired in 2013. Now, a range of manufacturers can make sildenafil tablets. This increased competition allows the medicine to be available at a lower cost.
How does it work?
Sildenafil works by blocking an enzyme called PDE5, which regulates blood flow in the penis. By inhibiting this enzyme, sildenafil helps relax the blood vessels and allows for increased blood flow. Typically, it takes effect within an hour and can remain active for up to four hours.
It's available in various dosages, commonly 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg tablets. Many men find it effective, and it has helped over 20 million men worldwide manage their ED.

Who can use Sildenafil?
Sildenafil is typically prescribed for men over 18 years of age who have erectile dysfunction (ED). However, it's not suitable for everyone. People with certain medical conditions or those taking specific medications should avoid it. For example, men who take nitrates for chest pain or have severe heart or liver problems should not use sildenafil. It's always best to consult with our registered healthcare providers to determine if sildenafil is safe and appropriate for you, which can be done by completing our easy-to-use online consultation.
What are the benefits of Sildenafil?
Sildenafil offers several benefits, especially for men experiencing erectile dysfunction (ED). Here are some of the key advantages:
• Improved Erectile Function: Sildenafil enhances the ability to achieve and maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse by increasing blood flow to the penis.
• Quick Onset: It typically starts working within 30 to 60 minutes after ingestion, making it a convenient option for planned or spontaneous sexual activity.
• Long-lasting Effect: The effects can last for up to four hours, providing a sufficient window for sexual activity without the need to rush.
• Proven Track Record: With over 20 million users worldwide, sildenafil has a well-documented history of safety and efficacy.

FAQs
How should I take sildenafil?
Sildenafil should be taken as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Typically, it's taken about 30 minutes to an hour before sexual activity. Avoid taking it more than once a day.
How long does sildenafil last?
The effects of sildenafil usually last up to four hours. However, this can vary depending on the individual.
Are there any food or drink restrictions while taking sildenafil?
Sildenafil can be taken with or without food. When this medicine is taken after a high-fat meal, it may take a little longer to start working. Do not take sildenafil with grapefruit or grapefruit juice, because this can affect how the medicine works. Drinking excessive alcohol can temporarily reduce your ability to achieve an erection and increase the risk of side effects. To get a benefit from the medicine, you are advised not to drink large amounts of alcohol before sexual activity.
Can I take sildenafil with other medications?
You should inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you're currently taking. Sildenafil can interact with certain medications, especially nitrates used forchest pain, which can lead to a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
What should I do if I experience side effects?
Common side effects include headaches, flushing, and an upset stomach. If youexperience serious side effects like priapism (an erection lasting more than 4hours), sudden vision loss, or sudden hearing loss, seek medical help
immediately.
Is sildenafil safe for everyone?
Sildenafil is generally safe for most men with erectile dysfunction, but it's not suitable for everyone. Individuals with certain medical conditions or those taking specific medications should avoid it. Always consult with your healthcare provider to ensure it's safe for you.
When should I not take Sildenafil?
Do not take Sildenafil
• If you are allergic to sildenafil or any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in the patient information leaflet.
• If you are taking medicines called nitrates, as the combination may lead to a dangerous fall in your blood pressure. Tell your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines which are often given for relief of angina pectoris (or “chest pain”). If you are not certain, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
• If you are using any of the medicines known as nitric oxide donors such as amyl nitrite (“poppers”), as the combination may also lead to a dangerous fall in your blood pressure.
• If you are taking riociguat. This drug is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (i.e., high blood pressure in the lungs) and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (i.e., high blood pressure in the lungs secondary to blood clots). PDE5 inhibitors, such as Sildenafil have been shown to increase the hypotensive effects of this medicine. If you are taking riociguat or are unsure tell your doctor.
• If you have a severe heart or liver problem.
• If you have recently had a stroke or a heart attack, or if you have low blood pressure.
• If you have certain rare inherited eye diseases (such as retinitis pigmentosa).
• If you have ever had loss of vision due to non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION).
• If you have sickle cell anaemia (an abnormality of red blood cells), leukaemia (cancer of blood cells), multiple myeloma (cancer of bone marrow).
• If you have a deformity of your penis or Peyronie’s Disease.
• If you have problems with your heart. Your doctor should carefully check whether your heart can take the additional strain of having sex.
• If you currently have a stomach ulcer, or a bleeding problem (such as haemophilia).
• If you experience sudden decrease or loss of vision, stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately. You should not use this medicine with any other oral or local treatments for erectile dysfunction. You should not use this medicine with treatments for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) containing sildenafil or any other PDE5 inhibitors.
• You should not take Sildenafil if you do not have erectile dysfunction.
• You should not take Sildenafil if you are a woman.
Are there any precautions that I need to be aware of before starting Sildenafil ?
You should schedule a health check-up with your doctor as soon as possible
within the first 6 months of starting to use Sildenafil to ensure that your
erection problems are not caused by any serious health condition. Erectile
dysfunction may be an early sign of:
• cardiovascular disease
• diabetes
• high blood pressure
• high cholesterol
Tell your doctor about your problems if you have not already done so.
