Description

Sumatriptan is a medication that can help to treat symptoms of migraines and cluster headaches. It is suitable to use when painkillers or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, have not relieved your symptoms.

How Sumatriptan Tablets work

Sumatriptan belongs to a group of medicines called triptans, which are used to treat migraine symptoms. Migraines are thought to be caused by the temporary widening of blood vessels in the head.

Sumatriptan is believed to reduce the widening of these blood vessels, which helps to reduce symptoms of migraines.

This is not a preventative medication and should only be taken when the migraine starts.

Sumatriptan usually starts to work within 30-60 minutes.

Directions

Always take Sumatriptan Tablets exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Happy Pharmacy pharmacist has told you.

The recommended dose for adults is 50mg in the event of a migraine attack. Some patients will require a dose of 100mg. You must check with your doctor before taking a higher dose.

Take the tablet with water, preferably as soon as possible after the onset of the migraine attack. Do not chew or crush the tablets. Speak to your doctor if your dose is too weak or too strong.

If symptoms are not reduced after the first dose, you must not take a second dose for the same attack. In the event of a subsequent attack, Sumatriptan can be taken again. If, after the first dose, your symptoms are reduced, but then return you may take a second and third dose, provided you wait at least 2 hours between doses.

You must not take more than 300mg of Sumatriptan in any 24-hour period.
