Why Wegovy® Benefits you need to know about Beyond weight loss, Wegovy® has benefits that set it apart from other treatments — highlighted from the latest clinical evidence.
❤️
Protects your heart — independently of weight lost In the SELECT trial, Wegovy® reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events by 20% relative risk reduction — independent of the amount of weight lost. Wegovy® is the only weight management medicine with a cardiovascular risk reduction indication.
💪
Preserves muscle mass — 84.5% of weight lost is fat MRI analysis from the STEP UP trial confirmed that 84.5% of weight lost was body fat, not lean muscle. Functional muscle capacity (measured by sit-to-stand test) was fully preserved vs placebo.
💊
No need to change your contraceptive pill Unlike some other weight loss injections, Wegovy® is not anticipated to reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. No requirement to switch from pill to another contraceptive method.
🦵
Clinically meaningful knee pain relief Wegovy® is the only approved pharmacotherapy to demonstrate a clinically meaningful improvement in knee osteoarthritis-related pain alongside superior weight loss vs placebo over 68 weeks.

🧬
94% similar to your own GLP-1 hormone Semaglutide shares 94% sequence similarity with human GLP-1 — the body's natural hormone for regulating appetite and calorie intake. Targets key areas of the brain to reduce hunger and increase fullness.
About the Medicine What is Wegovy® (semaglutide)?
Wegovy® is a prescription-only weight loss injection containing the active ingredient semaglutide. It is designed to support weight loss and long-term weight management in adults who meet specific clinical criteria. Wegovy® is taken once weekly using a pre-filled injection pen and is prescribed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. It belongs to a class of medicines known as GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), which mimic a naturally occurring hormone that regulates appetite and calorie intake. In the UK, Wegovy® is only available following a clinical assessment to ensure it is safe and appropriate for your individual health profile. At Happy Pharmacy, Wegovy® is prescribed by qualified clinicians and dispensed by a UK GPhC-registered pharmacy.
~21% average body weight loss with 7.2 mg dose
40M+ patients treated with semaglutide worldwide
94% similarity to your body's own GLP-1 hormone
20% relative risk reduction in cardiovascular events
🧬
GLP-1 receptor agonist Semaglutide mimics the GLP-1 hormone, targeting key areas of the brain to reduce hunger signals and increase feelings of fullness — supporting sustained weight management alongside diet and lifestyle changes.
Clinical Evidence Clinically proven Wegovy® results Wegovy® is backed by the STEP clinical trial programme — the largest weight management trial programme of its kind. Here is what the evidence shows.
~21% average body weight loss (STEP UP, 7.2 mg, 72 weeks)
>9/10 patients achieved ≥5% weight loss vs ~4/10 with placebo
1 in 3 patients achieved ≥25% weight loss vs 0% with placebo
20% relative risk reduction in major cardiovascular events (SELECT trial)
What the latest clinical trial showed (2025) In a large clinical trial over 18 months, people taking the higher-dose Wegovy® 7.2 mg lost an average of 19–21% of their body weight — compared to just 2–4% for those on a placebo. To put that in context, someone starting at 112 kg could expect to lose around 21–23 kg. More than 9 out of 10 patients lost at least 5% of their body weight, and 1 in 3 lost 25% or more. Standard dose results At the standard maintenance dose of Wegovy® 2.4 mg, a separate trial over 68 weeks found patients lost an average of 15–17% of their body weight — compared to around 2% with placebo — alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Typical weight loss timeline
Treatment stage Approximate timeframe Average weight loss observed*
Initial dose (0.25 mg → 0.5 mg) Weeks 1–8 ~2–5% of body weight
Dose escalation (1 mg → 1.7 mg) Weeks 9–16 ~5–10% of body weight
Maintenance dose (2.4 mg) Weeks 17–68 ~10–17% of body weight
*Based on average outcomes from STEP 1 clinical trial. Individual results vary. Weight loss should always be achieved alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
Heart Health Wegovy® and cardiovascular risk reduction Obesity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), which affects over 7.6 million people in the UK. More than 2 in 3 patients with a high BMI die from CVD.
Wegovy® is the only weight management medicine with a cardiovascular risk reduction indication In the SELECT trial — involving over 17,600 adults with overweight or obesity and established CVD, without diabetes — Wegovy® 2.4 mg reduced the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events by 20% relative risk reduction (1.5% absolute risk reduction) vs placebo, on top of standard of care. SELECT trial: HR 0.80; 95% CI 0.72–0.90; p<0.001. All patients treated on top of standard of care including CV risk factor management and healthy lifestyle counselling.
20% relative risk reduction in major cardiovascular events (SELECT trial)
📊
Heart protection works regardless of weight lost A prespecified analysis of the SELECT trial found that the cardiovascular benefit of Wegovy® was independent of the extent of weight loss — both patients who lost less than 5% and those who lost 5% or more experienced similar cardiovascular protection. This suggests potential mechanisms beyond weight loss alone.
Body Composition Preserving muscle while losing fat A common concern with weight loss treatments is whether muscle mass is lost alongside fat. The STEP UP trial provides reassuring evidence.
Body fat lost84.5%
Lean body mass lost15.5%
MRI sub-study analysis from the STEP UP trial confirmed that when patients lost weight with Wegovy®, the vast majority of that loss came from body fat, not lean muscle. The small reduction in lean mass was not clinically significant. Muscle function was assessed using a sit-to-stand test — there were no differences in functional muscle capacity between patients taking Wegovy® and those on placebo.

Women's health
No need to change your contraceptive pill Wegovy® does not affect how well the contraceptive pill works. You can continue taking your pill as normal — no switch to another form of contraception is needed. This is not the case with all weight loss injections.
Please note: if you experience severe vomiting or diarrhoea while taking Wegovy®, this could theoretically affect the absorption of any orally taken medicine, including the pill. If this applies to you, follow the pill manufacturer's missed-dose guidance or seek advice from your prescriber or pharmacist. Pregnancy: Semaglutide should not be used during pregnancy. If you wish to become pregnant, semaglutide must be stopped at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy due to its long half-life. Breast-feeding: Wegovy® should not be used whilst breast-feeding. Fertility: The effect of semaglutide on human fertility is currently unknown. Women of childbearing age are recommended to use contraception whilst taking semaglutide.
Treatment Plan Wegovy® dosage and treatment timeline Wegovy® is started at a low dose and increased gradually over 16 weeks to reach the maintenance dose of 2.4 mg, helping to minimise the likelihood of side effects. For eligible patients with obesity, the dose may be further increased to 7.2 mg.
Weeks Dose What this stage is for Stage
1–4 0.25 mg once weekly Starting dose to help your body adjust to treatment Starter
5–8 0.5 mg once weekly First increase; appetite control may begin to improve further Titration
9–12 1 mg once weekly Gradual step-up to support continued progress and tolerability Titration
13–16 1.7 mg once weekly Higher dose for patients who need additional appetite support Titration
17+ 2.4 mg once weekly Standard maintenance dose for ongoing weight management Maintenance
After ≥4 weeks on 2.4 mg 7.2 mg once weekly (3 × 2.4 mg injections) Higher dose for people with obesity (BMI ≥30) to achieve up to ~21% weight loss (STEP UP trial) STEP UP dose
⚠️
What if I don't lose enough weight? If you have been unable to lose at least 5% of your initial body weight after 6 months on the maintenance dose, your prescriber will need to review whether to continue treatment, taking into account your individual benefit-risk profile. Dose increases may be paused or delayed if gastrointestinal side effects occur.

Wegovy Delivery Update – No Ice Packs Required

From May 2026, Happy Pharmacy will be delivering Wegovy without refrigerated packaging. We understand this may feel different if you’re used to receiving your treatment cold, so we want to reassure you that your medication remains safe, stable, and fully effective throughout delivery.

This update is based on manufacturer‑approved stability data and has been reviewed in line with guidance from the UK medicines regulator (MHRA).

Below you’ll find clear answers to the most common questions.

When is this change happening?

From May 2026, Wegovy orders from Happy Pharmacy will be delivered without ice packs or refrigerated packaging.

The manufacturer has carried out stability testing confirming that Wegovy remains safe and effective during delivery at room temperature. This has been reviewed and accepted in line with MHRA guidance.

Why didn’t my Wegovy arrive cold?

Wegovy no longer requires cold‑chain packaging during delivery.

We know this may feel unusual if you’ve previously received it chilled. However, the manufacturer’s stability testing confirms that Wegovy remains safe and effective at room temperature during transit, and this has been reviewed in line with MHRA expectations

Your medication is safe to use.

Nothing about the medicine itself has changed. The update reflects new stability data showing that Wegovy remains effective during delivery at room temperature.

Why is this safe?

Wegovy is a protein‑based medication, and like many medicines in this category, it can safely tolerate short periods at room temperature during delivery without affecting how it works.

What does this mean for me?

  • Your treatment is exactly the same
  • There is no change to how you use Wegovy
  • Once delivered, store your pen in the fridge as normal (2°C–8°C)

If you ever have concerns, our clinical and customer care teams are here to help.

Will this affect how well Wegovy works?

No. Wegovy will work exactly as before.

Approved stability testing confirms it remains effective during delivery at room temperature.

Why did Wegovy need refrigeration before?

Earlier guidance was precautionary. Updated stability data now shows that Wegovy can be delivered safely without refrigerated packaging while still meeting all safety and effectiveness standards.

What if my pen feels warm when it arrives?

This is completely normal.

The pen does not need to feel cold on arrival. Stability testing confirms it remains safe and effective during delivery at room temperature.

What temperatures should I avoid?

Wegovy can be safely delivered at room temperature (below 30°C).

If you believe your parcel may have been exposed to temperatures above this, please contact us and we’ll advise you on the next steps.

Does this apply to all weight‑loss injectables?

No. This update applies only to Wegovy.

Other treatments may have different storage or delivery requirements. We’ll always provide clear guidance for your specific medication.

What should I do if I’m worried about my delivery?

If you’re unsure or concerned, please get in touch.

Our clinical and customer care teams can review your order and provide clear advice.

Will all future deliveries be the same?

Yes — Wegovy will continue to be delivered without refrigerated packaging.

During unusually warm periods, we may use cold packaging if needed to ensure your medication stays within the recommended temperature range.

Do I need to change how I store Wegovy at home?
