Feeling anxious about a first injection is common. A fear of needles can range from mild unease to an anxiety response that makes it difficult to attend appointments or use prescribed treatment. You do not need to force yourself through severe anxiety alone: tell your prescriber, pharmacist or GP before you start.
Can you use Mounjaro or Wegovy if you are afraid of needles?
Many people with needle anxiety can use an injection pen after clear instruction and support. Mounjaro and Wegovy are designed for subcutaneous injections, but pen mechanisms differ. Read the Instructions for Use in your pack and use our step-by-step guide to injecting Mounjaro or Wegovy alongside your own medicine leaflet.
Practical ways to make the first injection easier
- Ask a pharmacist, prescriber or nurse to explain the pen before your first dose. Knowing what each step involves can make it feel more predictable.
- Choose a calm, private place and give yourself enough time. Do not rush because someone else is waiting.
- Prepare everything first: your pen, a sharps bin and the instructions for your own device.
- Try slow breathing or a grounding exercise before you begin. Some people find a podcast, music or a supportive person nearby helpful.
- Look away from the injection site if seeing the needle increases anxiety.
Do not practise with a live dose
Do not use a pen, attach a needle or attempt an injection simply to “practise” unless a healthcare professional has instructed you to. Each medicine has its own technique and dose. Never share a pen or a needle with anyone else.
When extra support is a good idea
Speak to your prescriber or pharmacist if anxiety makes you delay doses, faint, panic, or feel unable to inject. A clinician can discuss whether supported administration, a different approach, or referral for help with a specific phobia is appropriate. If you have severe anxiety about needles in other areas of life too, your GP can advise on local NHS talking-therapy options.
Injection safety matters too
Only inject as prescribed and follow the leaflet for your exact pen. Use a new needle where your pen requires one, rotate injection sites, and dispose of sharps safely. Contact your prescriber or pharmacist if you are uncertain whether a dose was given correctly rather than taking another dose.
