Christmas and the Festive Season on Mounjaro, Wegovy or Foundayo
The festive season is a test for anyone watching their weight, and taking a GLP-1 medicine changes the picture in ways that are worth planning for. Smaller appetites make big meals uncomfortable, rich food and alcohol can bring on nausea, reflux and bloating, injection days can clash with parties and travel, and pharmacy opening hours and deliveries change over the holidays. This guide explains how to enjoy Christmas, New Year and winter celebrations while on Mounjaro, Wegovy, the Wegovy pill or Foundayo, how to handle alcohol and rich food, what to do if you miss a dose, how to travel with your medication, and how to avoid both guilt and setbacks.
Quick Answer

You can enjoy the festive season on a GLP-1 medicine, but plan for it. Eat smaller portions of the foods you most want and eat protein first, because rich, fatty meals and alcohol are more likely to cause nausea, reflux and bloating on slowed digestion. Do not skip or double a dose to fit around events: Mounjaro allows a late dose within 4 days and Wegovy within 5 days. Order your medicine early, keep pens safe when travelling, and do not worry about small changes in weight, which are normal and easy to correct in January.

Why the Festive Season Feels Different on a GLP-1 Medicine

GLP-1 medicines slow how quickly the stomach empties and turn down appetite. In normal life that helps you feel full on less. At a festive table it means that large helpings, rich sauces, fatty meats and puddings can leave you uncomfortably full or queasy. Alcohol can add to nausea, reflux and dehydration. And because your appetite is lower, you may skip meals earlier in the day to “save space”, which can make matters worse. A little planning goes a long way. Our nausea guide and constipation guide explain what helps if your digestion protests, and the Mounjaro, Wegovy and Foundayo side effects guides cover what to expect.

Festive challengeWhy it is harder on a GLP-1What helps
Large, rich mealsSlowed stomach emptying means fullness arrives quickly and lastsSmaller portions, protein first, stop at the first sign of fullness
Fatty and fried foodsFat slows digestion further, increasing nausea and refluxChoose lean meats, enjoy richer items in small amounts
AlcoholCan worsen nausea, reflux and dehydrationDrink less, slowly, with food and water
Late nights and travelDisrupted routines can lead to missed dosesSet reminders, plan your injection day in advance
Constant snacking and sweetsEasy to graze without noticing fullnessKeep a plate, not a bowl; leave treats for when you will enjoy them
The Christmas Dinner Game Plan

Christmas dinner is generally a good meal for GLP-1 users, because it contains plenty of protein in the turkey, ham, salmon or nut roast. The trick is eating in an order and amount your stomach can handle. Our nutrition guide has more ideas for eating well when your appetite is small.

Protein firstturkey, ham, fish or nut roast before the trimmings
Small first plateyou can always go back for more
Pudding lateran hour or two after the main course
  • Have a small, protein-containing breakfast and do not skip meals to save up. Arriving very hungry makes overeating and then discomfort more likely.
  • Start with the turkey or other protein, then vegetables, and add roast potatoes, stuffing and trimmings in smaller amounts.
  • Eat slowly and put your fork down between mouthfuls. Your fullness signal arrives sooner than it used to.
  • Go easy on rich gravy, pigs in blankets, cream and buttery sauces, which are the biggest triggers for nausea and reflux.
  • Have your pudding later, and choose a small slice.
  • Stay upright and take a short walk afterwards rather than lying on the sofa straight away.
Alcohol and the Festive Season

Alcohol is part of many celebrations, and people on GLP-1 medicines often find they tolerate it less well. It can worsen nausea, reflux, bloating and dehydration, and it adds calories that slow progress. If you have diabetes or take other medicines, alcohol needs extra care. We cover this in detail in our separate guides on alcohol with Mounjaro, Wegovy, the Wegovy pill and Foundayo.

TipWhy it helps
Eat before and while you drinkAlcohol on an empty stomach is more likely to cause nausea and reflux
Alternate each alcoholic drink with waterReduces dehydration and slows how much you drink
Choose smaller measures, or lower-alcohol optionsTolerance is often lower than before treatment
Avoid sweet cocktails and fizzy mixersThey add sugar, bloating and reflux
Know your limit and stop earlyHangovers are often worse when you are already eating less
Skip it entirely if you feel unwellNausea, vomiting and dehydration are good reasons to stop

Take care

If you have vomiting or diarrhoea after a heavy night, follow the advice for missed contraceptive pills if you use one (see our Mounjaro and the contraceptive pill guide), and drink plenty of fluids. Seek urgent help for severe, persistent stomach pain, repeated vomiting or being unable to keep fluids down.

Missed Doses Over the Holidays

Holiday routines are a common reason for missed injections. If you take Mounjaro and miss a dose, take it as soon as possible within 4 days after the missed dose; if more than 4 days have passed, skip it and take the next dose on your usual day. For Wegovy the window is 5 days. Never take two doses together to catch up. If you take the Wegovy pill or Foundayo daily, follow the missed dose advice for that medicine: see our guides on missing a Mounjaro dose and missing a Wegovy pill dose.

MedicineMissed dose rule (UK product information)
Mounjaro (weekly)Take within 4 days; if more than 4 days, skip and take next dose on the usual day
Wegovy injection (weekly)Take within 5 days; if more than 5 days, skip and take next dose on the usual day
Wegovy pill (daily)Follow the pill’s own missed dose advice
Foundayo (daily)Follow its own missed dose advice; speak to your prescriber after a longer gap

You can also change your injection day if it clashes with a celebration, as long as at least 3 days separate the two doses. Choose the new day in advance and note it down. If you miss several doses over a longer break, speak to your prescriber before restarting, as a lower restart dose may be advised. The dose schedules for Mounjaro, Wegovy, the Wegovy pill and Foundayo show the usual steps.

Plan Your Supply Before the Holidays

Pharmacy opening hours, couriers and delivery services all change over the festive period, and postal delays are common in the weeks before Christmas. Check how much medicine you have left, work out when your next pen or pack is due, and place your order early so it arrives well before you need it. Running out and missing doses is the most avoidable setback of the season.

  • Count your remaining doses and note the date your supply runs out.
  • Place your next order early, and check the dispatch and delivery dates for the holiday period.
  • If you are going away, make sure you have enough medicine for the whole trip plus a few spare days.
  • Keep your prescription details and a list of your medicines to hand.

Travelling With Your Medication

Many people travel at Christmas and New Year. Always follow the storage instructions in the patient information leaflet for your pen or tablets.

TipWhy it matters
Carry pens and tablets in your hand luggage, never in the holdHold temperatures can be extreme, and checked luggage can be delayed or lost
Never let pens freeze, and avoid leaving them in a hot carExtreme temperatures can damage the medicine
Keep medicine in its original packaging with the pharmacy labelHelps with security checks and shows it is prescribed to you
Take spare needles, and a small sharps container if away for longNeedles are single-use; never reuse them
Remember the in-use window of a started penA Mounjaro pen should be used within 30 days of first use, a Wegovy pen within 6 weeks
Plan injection day around time zonesKeep at least 3 days between doses

Our storage guides for Mounjaro and Wegovy explain how long pens can last and how to keep them, and our injection technique guide shows how to inject safely when you are away from home. Managing Weight Over the Festive Season

It is normal to see small fluctuations on the scales over the festive period. Food that is higher in salt and carbohydrate holds fluid, so a rise of a kilo or so is often water, not fat. Weighing yourself every day tends to cause anxiety, so consider weighing once a week at the same time, or simply skipping it for a few weeks.

  • Aim to maintain your weight over the festive period, rather than lose it. Maintenance is a success.
  • Keep up protein and, where you can, a bit of movement. A walk on Christmas Day counts.
  • Do not try to compensate for a big meal by skipping the next one or restricting heavily. This can lead to more discomfort and overeating later.
  • Get back to your normal routine the following day. One meal does not undo your progress.

If you have worries about your weight or progress, our plateau guides for Mounjaro, Wegovy and Foundayo, and our maintenance guides for Mounjaro, Wegovy and Foundayo, may help.
